Volume One, Chapter 52: The Onslaught of Beasts
“Don’t worry, I know just as much about this as you do,” Huang the Half-Immortal said solemnly. He nodded, then produced a small box and carefully placed the deck of cards inside.
“You all did well this time. I’ll put in a request to headquarters for your reward. If there’s anything you want, don’t hesitate to ask,” he added, clearly in high spirits. This trip to Haicheng had been more fruitful than expected: not only had he discovered a genius, but he’d also reclaimed a card from the “Wish Deck.”
Before he could even report on this, Minister Xie was already taking credit in front of Lin Feng—perhaps as a reminder that he hoped Lin Feng wouldn’t refuse his next request.
“I’m sorry, Beidou. We couldn’t hold him back.” Nearby, Tichy Conrad and Number Three, both utterly exhausted, drifted slowly to the ground. It was clear they had failed to stop Virgil in the end.
Guil Huaqing, leader of the Night Clan warriors, no longer hesitated. He clasped his hands in salute and departed in haste, soaring toward the Night Clan’s sanctuary to report what had happened.
They truly wanted to send more people in to investigate, but judging by the words of this Immortal, it seemed the way below was now sealed.
After this upheaval, the Demon Realm had returned to order. Everyone thought of peace, not war; all followed the rules and minded their own business, and life went on as orderly as before.
Back at her lodgings, Wang Xi could think only of where to go next. Her contract had just two days left, and under these circumstances it was no longer suitable to keep meeting with Blake.
“Haha, exactly! They’re the most important guests, after all. Lin Feng really has some sway, being able to invite both of them,” Xia Ruoxi said, unable to help herself.
The chilly, empty road saw almost no cars; only a train passed by now and then, never stopping.
The light screen displayed a message: a payment of silver coins had been received as a reward, followed by a new task—a side quest.
“I give up!” Cao Wuzui exclaimed as soon as he heard Housekeeper Xia’s voice. He could no longer keep up his masterful demeanor in front of the others, and looked pitifully at Zhu Wanyan.
He’d originally wanted to help the Cao family rise again after hearing Guo Dao describe their decline over the years, but now he was completely disillusioned.
Both sides had reached a critical point in the contest; this would decide victory or defeat, and Tu Di Liu Ruxian was fully confident. Who would claim this pivotal round? The answer would be revealed in the next installment.
“Young master! Of our organization’s five halls, one has already been silently wiped out by an assassin—Zhuque Hall is almost destroyed!” Qinglong emerged from the shadows to report, panic in his voice.
Lu Yushan was right: where had Rakshasa not traveled? But whenever Huanglong Mountain’s Youji was mentioned, she refused to go, saying only that the ancient marks engraved on the minds of all demons and ghosts forbade her. Left with no choice, she was sent to seek news of Xingtian’s “Dry Shield” and Xiao Tong.
“That’s right. What’s so great about being a star? Just be my Celestial Master’s wife instead. My dear, it’s late—let’s get some rest,” Zhang Wangxi said, grinning as he sidled over.
Si Linlin’s eyes shone with excitement—she’d never felt such a burning passion for the mysterious Golden Flower Ten Generals.
Seeing Gong Jingcheng suddenly appear perfectly healthy, Lin Yaxi guessed he was pretending for Sheng Lulu’s sake, unwilling to let her know his true condition.
First, refining spirit crystals and absorbing the world’s primal energy were the fastest ways to strengthen oneself in a short time.
The key was that in unfamiliar territory, you never knew if the hiding place you dug today would have a squad of sea folk marching right over it tomorrow.
With a faint smile, Jun Yixi let her reveal the identity of the guardian spirit, and his anger from earlier was completely soothed. He sighed and helped her take down the quilt himself.
He promised Blitz that with his progress in the field of arcane magic, together they might even conquer death itself.
On the field, the score remained 2:1. Both sides had opportunities, but neither managed a fourth goal.
Even earlier, the other great demons had looked down on Shackle for his timidity, but none of them expected that at this critical moment, he would suddenly burst forth with unexpected courage.
