Chapter Thirty-Seven: This Girl Has a Promising Future
Chapter Thirty-Seven: This Young Lady Has a Promising Future
Seeing Old Chen’s expression as if he’d seen a ghost, Sister Ge had a pretty good idea of what was going on. She pressed on eagerly, “Well? What do you think?”
“Isn’t this song something special?” she asked. “Is it well-written?”
Old Chen stared at the screen and replied helplessly, “If you had a bit of musical knowledge, you wouldn’t need to come to me. This isn’t a question of whether it’s good or not—it’s a question of whether it’s good or truly excellent.”
“The lyrics and composition are both outstanding, and the song itself is positive and meaningful. If you consider Bai Ling’s background, this song is bound to be a hit. Just how big it’ll get, I can’t say—there are too many variables. But are you certain Bai Ling wrote this in just one hour?”
Sister Ge was so delighted she could have floated off the ground. For a moment, she recalled the day her husband bade her farewell. To have one of her own artists compose something that could make Old Chen react like this—it was no less gratifying than seeing a child she’d raised herself grow up to be accomplished.
Although she wasn’t actually very close with Bai Ling, they’d only been manager and artist for just over a week. Nevertheless, having witnessed so much, Sister Ge couldn’t help but feel both pity and regret for Bai Ling, wishing she could treat her like her own daughter.
She caught herself before her thoughts wandered too far and refocused on Old Chen. “I’m certain—it was written in an hour.”
Receiving such a definite answer, Old Chen drew a sharp breath. “If what you say is true, it’s terrifying. Even among the industry’s top lyricists and composers, it’s impossible to deliver something so complete in an hour. Even if inspiration strikes, it would be difficult... Unless...”
“Unless what?” Sister Ge prompted.
“Unless Bai Ling is a true genius.”
Looking at Old Chen’s serious and earnest face, Sister Ge couldn’t help but recall Bai Ling’s own self-assessment—a ‘music prodigy.’ Who’s to say it isn’t true?
Her thoughts drifted, but Old Chen continued, “It’s hard to imagine. If everything you said is true, then Bai Ling’s future is promising—she might even become a top-tier singer.”
The words “top-tier singer” jolted Sister Ge back to her senses, her professional instincts kicking in. “Old Chen, are you serious?”
“Of course I’m serious. Now get out of here—I have to pick up my kid. You’ve seen what you need to see, haven’t you?”
Sister Ge gave a little laugh, thanked him, and hurried out of the music department. She immediately contacted the company’s equipment management to reserve a recording studio for Bai Ling.
She was eager to get Bai Ling into the studio as soon as possible, record the song, and release it—propelling her to the top of the charts. To be honest, after so many years in the industry, Ge Fenfen had never managed to launch someone of this caliber. It had always been her greatest regret.
Now, with Bai Ling’s momentum, she might finally realize her career ambition. How could she not be excited?
She thought calling Bai Ling might be too slow, knowing her unhurried temperament. Without hesitation, she called for Xiangzi and Miaomiao.
“Come on, let’s go fetch our young lady and bring her to the company!”
Xiangzi and Miaomiao were already on standby at the company. At Sister Ge’s command, they set out at once.
Meanwhile, Bai Ling was waiting quietly for news in her hotel room—scrolling through short videos to pass the time.
Knock, knock. There was a rap at the door.
Bai Ling opened it to find Bai Zihao standing outside. “Sis, I just wanted to say goodbye. I’ll be busy for a while.”
He looked at her with a shy smile. It’s often said that brothers and sisters are like fire and water, and no matter how beautiful the sister, in her brother’s eyes she’s just ordinary. But Bai Zihao’s attitude toward Bai Ling was more like that toward a mother—affectionate, with a touch of respect.
Seeing the look in his eyes, Bai Ling suddenly felt a sense of parental responsibility. “I’d planned to chat with you these next couple of days, but since you’ll be busy, just remember to take care of yourself. Oh, and be wary of Bai Zhengyi and Lin Fenfang—they won’t let this go easily. Stay alert. It’s best not to see them. If they come looking for trouble, or threaten you, call me.”
Bai Ling was genuinely worried her father might impulsively show up. She herself was well protected, but Bai Zihao might not be so lucky.
After all, she was just a celebrity, not some high-ranking official. Aside from the exposure her profession brought, she was still an ordinary person and couldn’t arrange bodyguards for Bai Zihao. But she did have some money on hand.
“So, Xiao Hao, you’ve always talked about starting your own business—what kind of venture is it?”
As his sister, Bai Ling had never really asked before. She’d helped him out with living expenses during his tough times, but perhaps because he hadn’t accomplished much yet, he’d never mentioned any details.
Now, with a rare moment to talk, Bai Zihao scratched his head. “Sis, promise you won’t scold me. I’m developing an anime-style game with some friends. But don’t get the wrong idea—it’s nothing inappropriate.”
Bai Ling’s eyes lit up. “Of course I don’t misunderstand. I know all about anime and gaming.”
After all, at heart Bai Ling was still Bai Lin—he knew all about otaku culture. But she hadn’t expected her brother to be a game developer. The industry was fiercely competitive—if he succeeded, he’d really take off.
Bai Ling thought for a moment, then said, “Starting a business is tough, and developing a game needs a lot of money. I’ll transfer you some funds as an investment. Use it to hire a security guard for your office—make sure you’re safe.”
Bai Zihao was momentarily taken aback, not expecting Bai Ling to invest in him. But he soon smiled wryly. “Sis, you really don’t need to worry about me—I’m an adult now.”
Bai Ling ruffled his hair. “You’re my little brother. Adult or not, that’s settled.”
After their conversation, Ge Fenfen arrived with Xiangzi and Miaomiao in tow. Bai Zihao said goodbye and took his backpack, while Ge Fenfen had Xiangzi escort him to the door.
Then Ge Fenfen set about helping Bai Ling with her makeup herself. “Let’s go—come with me to the company. We’re recording your song.”
