Chapter 113: Coming to Light

Hearing the agonized screams coming from the cafeteria, Yi Chen's heart was not without some turmoil.
If people do not provoke me, I will not provoke them; but if they do, I will retaliate.
If they hadn’t intended to harm Mu Qing and used the lives of so many innocent teachers and students as leverage against him, he wouldn't have resorted to such extremes.
Since his full zombification experience, Yi Chen felt his body and mind had undergone significant changes from the inside out.
Perhaps at first, he still held a somewhat naive sense of heroism, but now it had completely faded.
He had little interest in the grand scheme of human survival and was not intent on wiping out every mindless zombie; he only sought to protect those he cared for, keeping them safe.
This was the original motivation that kept him going, the unchanging resolve he held to this day. If one day even these attachments and bonds vanished, then he truly would become a monster.
However, in this apocalyptic world, even such modest wishes were hard to fulfill. Various incidents constantly tested his limits.
“Am I being cold-blooded by doing this?” Yi Chen asked Liang Bing sideways.
“A little,” Liang Bing answered honestly.
“They brought it on themselves.” He glanced away.
“At least you didn’t strike directly. They might still have a chance to escape, depending on luck and skill,” Liang Bing said.
Yi Chen was a bit surprised—since when did this little girl learn to comfort others?
Not long after they stepped outside, a convoy of vehicles pulled up at the main gate of Ivory Tower.
It had only been about fifteen minutes since Yi Chen called Zhou Shiwen; now ambulances and armed security had arrived. Among the vehicles was a black sedan belonging to Zhou Zihao, carrying Bai Ge and Ling Lan.
Many teachers and students in Ivory Tower were affected; due to the side effects of the hypnosis, some had fainted and lost consciousness. The unaffected floors were promptly sealed off by staff, with students strictly forbidden from moving around, awaiting rescue.
Overall, no further chaos had erupted.
Mu Zongxing had also rushed over immediately upon hearing about the incident at Ivory Tower. His daughter studied there, and he was extremely worried about her safety.
Through the car window, he saw a few people emerge from the gate and nearly suffered another heart attack.
Yi Chen was carrying his daughter, Mu Qing!
“Why is it him again?!” Mu Zongxing gasped, struggling to catch his breath, hastily rubbing his chest.
Though he didn’t know the details, his intuition told him this sudden incident had everything to do with Yi Chen, and his daughter had been caught up in it once more!

Meanwhile, Bai Ge and Ling Lan had already rushed forward to help the injured Liang Bing into the car for emergency bleeding control and wound treatment.
Yi Chen was pondering how to take care of Mu Qing when he looked up to see Mu Zongxing’s assistant, Xiao Li, nervously approaching.
If Xiao Li was here, Mu Qing’s father must be nearby as well.
They seemed quite well-informed... Yi Chen thought for a moment and decided to let them take her back for proper care. The Mu family was wealthy and surely well-protected; Mu Qing would be safe there.
Xiao Li helped Mu Qing back onto the car.
“What did he do to my daughter?!” Mu Zongxing was frantic.
“He said the young lady only fainted temporarily… she should be fine; just some minor abrasions,” Xiao Li, who had some medical knowledge, quickly examined her.
“Take her to the nearest hospital immediately,” Mu Zongxing was still uneasy.
Yi Chen was an infected person, and although Mu Qing’s abrasions did not bleed, a thorough examination was still necessary just in case.
Mu Qing leaned sideways against the backseat, a single shimmering tear hanging on her long eyelashes.
She had regained consciousness faintly while Yi Chen was carrying her in the elevator down to B1.
She vaguely understood what had happened to her but did not want to open her eyes and face reality.
She was very scared.
If Yi Chen hadn’t rescued her in time, she certainly wouldn’t be alive now. How devastated would her father and other family and friends be?
Beyond fear, Mu Qing also felt inexplicably disappointed and melancholic.
She had overheard the conversation between Yi Chen and the two infected individuals and realized she didn’t really understand him.
What was he experiencing now, what troubles was he facing, what challenges lay ahead? She had no idea.
Or rather—she finally acknowledged that their worlds had indeed diverged.
Perhaps it was truly better to keep some distance from him.
While Mu Qing was lost in sorrowful thoughts alone, Mu Zongxing was also deep in contemplation.
After today’s ordeal, he was more determined than ever to deal with Yi Chen.
He realized there might be some secret dealings between Zhou Shiwen and Yi Chen.

But without concrete evidence, he could not bring the matter to light or confront them; doing so would only make him a conspicuous target.
Mu Qing was soon taken to a nearby hospital. Mu Zongxing insisted on hospitalization and personally handled the admission procedures.
Afterwards, he returned to the car only to find there was an extra passenger in the backseat, while Xiao Li, who had been driving, was slumped over the steering wheel, motionless.
The newcomer wore an exaggerated black cloak despite the summer heat and a baseball cap that concealed half his face, seemingly intent on hiding his identity.
Alarm bells rang in Mu Zongxing’s mind; it appeared this person had deliberately come seeking him out.
“Don’t worry, I just gave him a sedative,” the man spoke, his voice familiar.
“Doctor Ouyang?” Mu Zongxing was surprised.
“Mr. Mu, long time no see.” Ouyang Hong removed his hat. His hair was disheveled, and his beard unkempt, a far cry from his formerly immaculate appearance.
This was understandable—Future Group was now secretly wanted throughout the city, and he was living a life in the shadows, with no concern for his image.
“Do you have business with me?” Mu Zongxing, a seasoned businessman accustomed to the world’s ways, quickly regained his composure and asked.
Ouyang Hong must have some means to know he was here and waiting in the car, but now was not the time to inquire.
This man had defected to the monsters, a dangerous element; he needed to be kept under control and his intentions probed before discussing anything else.
“Mr. Mu, you should understand my current predicament,” Ouyang Hong sighed. “I’m forced to serve the monsters, compelled to oppose the humans of Nanchuan, and I can never return to where I once was.”
Mu Zongxing listened quietly, unsure what trick Ouyang Hong might be up to.
“You don’t need to worry about me. I’m alone. If you call the guards, I’ll be captured soon enough,” Ouyang Hong said candidly.
Mu Zongxing scanned the surroundings; with people coming and going nearby, there seemed to be no ambush.
“I hope you can do me a favor, and of course, I will offer you a very favorable return.”
“What do you want me to do? Guarantee your return to the company?” Since the other party had begun negotiating, Mu Zongxing relaxed a bit.
He wanted to see what this now penniless Ouyang Hong desired and what he could offer in exchange.
