Volume 1 Chapter 9 Not the Source
"Yue'yue?"
Wen Huaiye was also puzzled by Song Yue's silence.
Song Yue suppressed her trembling body and slowly raised her eyes, revealing a smile no different from the one she had at eighteen. "This is my home, after all. Besides, we are only engaged. If I were to just leave with you like this, I don't know how the world would mock me."
Her tone was coquettish, completely devoid of the sharpness and aggression she had shown moments ago.
Wen Huaiye was taken aback. He had not seen this side of Song Yue for a long time. Ever since Song Min was brought back to the Song family five years ago, he had rarely seen such a bright smile on Song Yue's face.
"Yue'yue..."
"Song Yue, do you have to cling to Wen Huaiye right in front of Minmin?" Song Sinian shouted at the two of them. "Wen Huaiye, don't forget what you said at the hospital. As of now, our Song family does not welcome you!"
Song Yue maintained her gentle smile. "Huaiye, the house is in such a state today, you should head back first."
Wen Huaiye nodded. "Then I will leave. In a few days, I will take you to see my grandmother."
"Alright."
Wen Huaiye turned to leave, then walked back a few steps and whispered gently to Song Yue, "Yue'yue, I have no relationship with Song Min. Her current health condition means she shouldn't get too upset..."
Before he could finish, Song Yue laughed. "Enough! Am I some kind of monster? She is already in this state; would I still bully her? In your eyes, am I such a wicked person?"
Wen Huaiye immediately replied, "Of course not. Our Yue'yue has the kindest heart."
Having secured Song Yue's promise, Wen Huaiye left with peace of mind.
Only when Wen Huaiye disappeared from view did the smile on Song Yue's face completely vanish. She stared at the front gate with cold eyes, her lips pressed into a thin line, radiating an aura of detachment.
"Third Miss!" Mother Yang, who had witnessed the entire scene, called out with a hint of alarm.
Song Yue turned to look at Mother Yang, her gaze full of scrutiny, as if trying to pierce through the skin to the soul beneath. "Mother Yang, have many things happened in these five years?"
Mother Yang opened her mouth but said nothing.
Song Yue continued, "In their eyes, am I, Song Yue, really that stupid?"
Mother Yang felt a pang of heartache. "Third Miss..."
Song Yue smiled. "Mother Yang, I'm fine."
She turned and headed upstairs. As she passed Song Min's room, the door was open. The Song family members were all gathered around the bed, looking incredibly anxious.
Jiang Zhiyi held her close, her heart aching. "Minmin, stop crying. How can you cry at a time like this? You must keep in mind what the doctor said!"
As soon as Song Min looked up and caught sight of Song Yue at the door, she couldn't help but shrink her shoulders. This action immediately drew the attention of the Song family members in the room. Every pair of eyes turned toward her.
Seeing Song Yue standing at the door, Song Sinian and Song Siyan instinctively stepped forward, blocking Song Min and looking at her with vigilance. Song Lin'an, with a cold expression, walked to the door and, without saying a word to Song Yue, reached out and slammed it shut with a loud bang.
Song Yue stared at the closed door, her mind lingering on the look Song Min had given her. She hadn't been mistaken. That look was filled with triumph and provocation.
Song Yue returned to her room, took out a communication device from her suitcase, and after verification, a voice came through.
"G973, do you have something to report?"
Song Yue was silent for a long time, her voice trembling slightly. "Wen Huaiye is not the Source."
"Please report in detail."
Song Yue recounted everything that had happened over the past few days. "Wen Huaiye's behavior is vastly different from the past."
"G973, this does not prove that Wen Huaiye is not the Source."
Song Yue's voice rose, though she still tried to maintain composure. "He lies, deceives, is self-righteous, and wavers between two women..."
"G973, please remain calm."
The tears Song Yue had been forcibly suppressing finally fell uncontrollably. "He is not Wen Huaiye!"
The voice on the other end was silent for a long while before softening. "G973, I know this mission is difficult. If you feel you cannot handle it, you may apply to terminate the mission."
Song Yue leaned against the wall, feeling utterly drained. "Is there anyone else who can succeed besides me?"
The other side remained silent.
Song Yue took a deep breath. "Based on my personal judgment, he is not Wen Huaiye."
"Headquarters requires evidence."
Song Yue replied, "I will gather more evidence."
"G973, I wish for you to see the Source clearly and remain true to yourself."
"I wish for me to see the Source clearly and remain true to myself."
Song Yue hung up and put away the device. Just as she finished, she heard a commotion outside. She walked to the door and opened it. A group of men and women in uniforms, each carrying a pile of items, were heading toward Song Min's room.
Following behind them was a familiar face: Uncle Bai, the butler of the Wen family.
"Uncle Bai!" Song Yue called out instinctively.
Growing up, she had often visited the Wen family, and Uncle Bai had always been very kind to her, remembering all her habits clearly and treating her with even more care than he did Wen Huaiye.
But now...
Uncle Bai only glanced at her with cold, indifferent eyes, even tinged with a hint of angry resentment, and walked straight past her. He reached the door of Song Min's room but did not go in. Instead, he spoke with extreme deference toward those inside, "Miss Minmin, these are all sent specifically by the Madam. They are all the latest clothes and jewelry for the season."
"The Madam said, how could some stray cats and dogs ever compare to Miss Minmin?"
"The Madam told Miss Minmin not to worry; with her around, let's see who dares to bully you."
As he spoke, Uncle Bai cast a glance at Song Yue, who was standing not far away. Song Yue gripped the door frame, her knuckles turning white.
Song Siyan stepped out, and upon seeing Song Yue, he said loudly and deliberately, "Auntie Qu is truly so considerate of Minmin."
Uncle Bai snorted coldly. "That is only because your Song family is incompetent, insisting on bringing back some stray cats and dogs to upset Miss Minmin."
The remark was a stinging slap to the Song family's face. Song Yue instinctively wanted to speak up, but Song Siyan, standing nearby, chuckled. "Auntie Qu is right. It is all our Song family's fault for bringing back some stray cats and dogs."
"Since we know your Song family isn't careful, our Madam has specifically hired a chef. From now on, Miss Minmin's meals and nutritional care will all be handled by this Master Li."
A middle-aged man in a chef's uniform stood at the top of the stairs and nodded with a smile.
"To prevent any foul play, Miss Minmin's ingredients will also be procured by us personally."
Song Sinian stepped out. "That doesn't seem right! Our Song family has our own specialized procurement channels."
Uncle Bai sneered. "The Song family indeed has specialized channels, but can the Song family guarantee safety?" He looked at Song Yue. "Can the Song family guarantee that certain people won't try to harm Miss Minmin?"
Song Sinian followed his gaze and saw Song Yue. He fell silent.
From inside the room, Song Lin'an's voice rang out, "Let it be done!"
Song Yue stood frozen.
