Chapter 21: I'll Go Set Things Right for You
A torrential rain suddenly swept across the sky. In the old district of Jiangcheng, passersby cast occasional glances at an elderly man lying on the ground in front of a secluded clinic.
"Hey, why is there an old man lying at the entrance of the clinic? Doesn't he have any family to come and get him?"
"Shh, keep it down. Don't worry about him. I heard he offended some big shot. He was originally having surgery at a major hospital, but the doctors there didn't want to anger that person, so they transferred him here just to make this clinic take the fall and dump him out."
"What? That’s horrible. This old man is so miserable!"
"Who's to say he isn't..."
As the rain intensified, passersby quickened their pace, wanting nothing to do with the trouble.
Two young men in white coats walked out of the clinic, caught a glimpse of the old man on the side of the road, and couldn't help but show expressions of disgust.
"Why hasn't anyone come to get him yet!"
"Wasn't his family notified?" one of the young men asked coldly.
The other shrugged. "God knows. I made the calls, anyway. Hey, didn't he have a granddaughter with him? Where did she go?"
"Who knows? Probably realized her grandfather was dying and ran off! I have to say, I'm impressed—in Jiangcheng, there are actually people who dare to provoke Young Master Xu. Isn't that just asking for death?"
"Exactly."
"Whatever, forget him. Did that batch of antibiotics from the black market arrive? I'm waiting to make some money!"
"Should be soon, don't rush. But still, him lying at our clinic entrance doesn't look good. Should we toss him a bit further away?"
"Fine. The hospital wants to use us as scapegoats, but we aren't stupid enough to take the blame and ruin our own reputation."
"..."
With that, the two walked over to the old man. They looked down at his pale face with not a shred of sympathy. Sensing their gaze, Old Zhang opened his eyes, breathing in weak, ragged gasps.
"You... you bunch of animals..."
Hearing this, one of the young men flew into a rage and kicked Old Zhang directly in the waist.
"Hiss..."
Already nursing an injury to his waist, Old Zhang gasped in agony, his lips trembling.
"You stinking old man, you're at death's door and you still dare to curse me? It's a courtesy that I haven't thrown you into the trash bin yet."
"You provoked Young Master Xu; you should be grateful you're still alive."
"You've lived this long and still don't understand how the world works. You deserve to end up like this."
The other young man chimed in with disdain, "Exactly, exactly."
"We've been too lenient with you."
"Should we just throw him in the trash?"
"Sure."
As they spoke, they moved to grab him, not wanting to waste another word. But just as their hands touched Old Zhang’s shoulders, a loud "bang" echoed.
One of the young men went flying, slamming hard into a stone wall. The other’s expression shifted instantly. He scrambled up and turned around, only to see a cold-faced young man standing behind them.
"Kid, who the hell are you? Meddling in business that isn't yours? Looking for a death wish, are you? I'll kill you..."
"Ugh!" Before he could finish his sentence, the cold-faced youth grabbed him by the throat and swung him aside.
"Kill me?"
The youth sneered, his wrist flicking with force as he tossed the man away. At the same time, Old Zhang recognized the face and looked shocked. "Director... Director Guan..."
"Grandpa!"
"Old Zhang!"
As his voice trailed off, two minivans pulled up to the side of the road. From them, the majority of the group's security team rushed out, accompanied by the little girl, Xiao Qian. They quickly surrounded Old Zhang. Seeing him covered in severe injuries, a wave of intense fury surged in the eyes of every guard.
"Old Zhang..." A guard knelt down, his eyes turning red. He was a boy from the countryside with no education and no background; if it weren't for Old Zhang pleading on his behalf, he would never have had the chance to work for the group. Everyone here had been helped by Old Zhang unconditionally at one point or another. To them, he was a truly good man who never sought reward, only knowing how to help those in need. Yet, such a man had been reduced to this state. They were furious. Their blood boiled.
Guan Sheng scanned Old Zhang’s body. The injuries were far worse than yesterday. Yesterday, it was just a broken rib—not life-threatening—but today, both his arms and legs were severely crushed. Without treatment, he would be crippled for life. This malicious tactic was clearly intended to make him suffer a fate worse than death.
It sickened Guan Sheng. With a flicker of movement, he appeared before the two men in white coats.
"What... what are you doing?" One of them, terrified, tried to scramble away, but Guan Sheng grabbed him by the back of his head.
"Who did this?" Guan Sheng asked coldly.
The young man trembled, "I warn you, I'm under the protection of Brother Hu! Do you know who Brother Hu is? One of the top three lords of the Jiangnan underworld! If you dare touch a hair on my head, I guarantee you—"
"Snap!"
Guan Sheng didn't give him the chance to finish. With a twist of his hand, he crushed the man like an ant. He had truly had enough. Was the Dragon Kingdom not supposed to be the most peaceful place? Why, in the unseen corners, were these people and these deeds even more repulsive than those abroad? Wearing white coats and running clinics meant to save lives, yet acting like swine, profiting for the powerful. Did such people deserve to live?
At that moment, the other young man was scared out of his wits, his legs shaking uncontrollably. Guan Sheng’s gaze fell upon him. Before he could even ask, the youth stammered, "I'll tell you, I'll tell you! It... it was Young Master Xu!"
"Xu Tao?" Guan Sheng asked.
The youth nodded frantically. "Yes, yes! Young Master Xu said this old man offended him, so he ordered the surgeon to cripple him and throw him out of the hospital. The hospital didn't want to make a scene, so after the surgery, they transferred him to us under the guise of a routine move and told us to dump him."
"That's all I know... please, don't kill me... please..." He knelt on the ground, kowtowing repeatedly to Guan Sheng.
Hearing this, Guan Sheng remembered Xu Tao from the night before. If only he had killed him then.
"Grandpa, Grandpa..." Xiao Qian’s crying could be heard from the side. "Grandpa, don't die. I've already lost my mom and dad, I can't lose you too, Grandpa..."
"Please, open your eyes and look at me! Grandpa!"
Guan Sheng’s expression shifted. Just as he was about to walk over, a sharp, stabbing pain erupted in his head, as if needles were piercing his brain.
"What's happening..." Guan Sheng closed his eyes, cold sweat breaking out on his forehead. He channeled his inner energy to calm himself, but suddenly, flashes of blurred memories surged in his mind:
*"Daddy, Mommy, don't leave me, I want to go home..."*
*"Why is everyone dead... No... No..."*
*"From today on, you are one of mine in the Assassin City. I am your master. From now on, you are called—Guan Sheng!"*
"Hummm!"
With a buzz in his brain, Guan Sheng snapped out of the memory. As his consciousness cleared, his heart ached with a dull throb. Just then, his phone rang.
Guan Sheng pulled it out and held it to his ear. "Hello?"
"Master Guan, we've checked. The person who issued the bounty of one million to kill you yesterday is Xu Tao, the eldest son of the Xu family in Jiangcheng."
Upon hearing this, Guan Sheng’s killing intent exploded. "Where is he?"
On the other end, Black Eagle King reported, "At the Li family’s old estate. Today, all the senior members of the Li family have gathered there as well; it seems something has happened. Master Guan, do you need me to..."
"No!" Guan Sheng rejected the offer coldly. "I have one task for you."
"I am sending you an address. Arrange for the best orthopedic experts to save someone immediately."
"You have ten minutes to get there."
"Do not fail me!"
Realizing the gravity of the situation, Black Eagle King replied firmly, "Yes, Master Guan. I will arrange it at once."
Hanging up, Guan Sheng walked toward Old Zhang with a dark expression. Watching the little girl sobbing on his chest, his killing intent reached its peak.
Old Zhang whispered in a weak voice, "Director Guan... I've caused you trouble... I..."
Guan Sheng knelt down and patted his shoulder. "I've sent people to help."
"Just focus on recovering."
"I am going to help you—collect the debt."
