Chapter 7: Training the Wife Group's Security Detail
At the same time, inside the Black Eagle Manor—the so-called Palace of the Night in the underworld of Jiangnan Province—a blood-curdling scream echoed through the halls.
Blood dripped from a dagger onto the corpse of an assassin. The man holding the blade wiped the gore away with his own clothing. He wore an intricately carved mask, and all the cold-blooded killers in the room were kneeling before him, trembling, not daring to make a sound.
Outside, in a blood-soaked fighting ring, two hulking underground pugilists were exchanging savage blows, fighting with no restraints whatsoever. The air was filled with the passionate, almost frenzied roars of wealthy spectators. They looked upon the fighters as mere beasts, using the brutality to vent the madness suppressed within their own hearts. The sight of blood stimulated their nerves, driving them to pour their fortunes into the ring in search of thrills in the dead of night.
This was the territory of the Black Eagle Lord!
He was a figure who made countless tycoons tremble with fear, yet they all scrambled over one another to curry his favor. But at this moment, this man who stood above the underworld of Jiangnan Province was gripped by terror because of a name brought back by one of his subordinates.
"Thump!"
His hands shook so violently that the dagger fell to the floor. He slowly removed his mask; his pupils had shrunk to mere pinpoints. He could only hear his own faint, trembling mutters.
"Guan Sheng..."
"The Demon Blade!"
"The number one assassin on the global rankings."
"The most terrifying young man to ever emerge from Assassin City."
"No... impossible. How could he come to the Dragon Kingdom? And for him to run into me... have I brought this calamity upon myself?"
Horrifying memories flooded the Black Eagle Lord's mind like a tidal wave. He remembered years ago, when he was nothing more than a low-level pimp and street thug abroad. One day, he had witnessed "true slaughter." He had been so frightened that day that he had lost all composure. It was that very day that transformed him, teaching him a vital lesson: if you are not ruthless, you will fail; if you do not act with resolve, you will perish.
He had returned to the country with determination, using the money he had scraped together over the years to start an underground boxing business in the Jiangnan underworld. He then used his profits to train terrifying killers and death squads, clawing his way to the top through sheer brutality.
For that man, beyond fear, he felt awe, devotion, and worship. That was why, upon hearing the name Guan Sheng, his first instinct had been to kill his own subordinate.
"No one must ever know that the legendary assassin, the Demon Blade, is in the Dragon Kingdom."
Though he did not know why Guan Sheng had come to Jiang City, his intuition told him that this "God of Assassins" must be here for something of immense importance.
"My Lord, the match outside has concluded. Tianlong won," a clerk responsible for the finances reported as he walked in, cupping his hands.
The Black Eagle waved his hand dismissively. "Settle the accounts then."
"And this corpse...?"
"Dispose of it. Give his family three million, and arrange for them to move abroad."
"Yes."
After the orders were given, the staff began to dispose of the body. The Black Eagle Lord walked to the floor-to-ceiling window and gazed out at the moonlight.
"My Lord, is something troubling you?"
With his hands behind his back, the Black Eagle sighed. "I have inadvertently committed a grave error and offended someone I should not have. The only way forward now is to proactively seek forgiveness. Tell the clerk to return that one billion to the nobleman from Dragon Capital. You will accompany me to Jiang City tomorrow."
"Yes!"
—
"Achoo!"
Li Yuyan, who had spent the night in the study, sneezed the moment she stepped out. She went into the bathroom to freshen up, but through the window, she saw Guan Sheng sitting cross-legged in the courtyard, seemingly meditating.
It was seven in the morning. He was up this early? Li Yuyan couldn't help but be curious about what Guan Sheng had been through. Seeing how skilled he was at meditation, could he be a Taoist?
Before she could process the thought, Guan Sheng raised his hand slightly. A flash of white light seemed to streak through the air. A split second later, a thick branch from the towering tree in the courtyard snapped off and crashed to the ground.
*Swoosh!*
Li Yuyan’s hand, holding her toothbrush, froze in mid-air.
"This..."
When she finally regained her senses, she saw a blade, half an arm's length long, in Guan Sheng’s hand.
"Blade qi!" Li Yuyan suddenly realized. Because her grandfather was a founding hero of the nation, she had grown up meeting many masters of traditional Chinese arts. She had often heard those giants speak of a certain type of person who could reach a realm where they could kill without leaving a trace. Was this the power Guan Sheng had just displayed?
Wait! Connecting this to the series of events from yesterday, Li Yuyan suddenly felt nervous. Had she married a top-tier powerhouse? She didn't know whether to feel excited or terrified.
At that moment, she saw her parents walk out of the living room with beaming smiles, their faces crinkling with joy.
"Oh, son-in-law, what a magnificent technique! Are you tired? Would you like some water to rest?"
"Son-in-law, you’ve been up so early, you must be exhausted! Let me wipe the sweat for you."
Guan Sheng slowly stood up, tucked the blade into his sleeve, took the tea from his father-in-law, and accepted the towel from his mother-in-law to wipe his brow.
"I’m hungry. Is breakfast ready?"
Her father nodded eagerly. "Yes, yes! Fried dough sticks, soy milk, steamed buns, shumai, lean meat porridge, vegetable porridge, and braised yellow croaker—everything is ready."
"Mm." Guan Sheng handed the towel back to his mother-in-law and walked into the living room.
Seeing this, Li Yuyan seriously suspected that she had been picked up from a trash can. Since she was a child, she had never seen her parents treat her like that. But this was a problem: the better they treated Guan Sheng, the more furious they would be when they eventually found out he wasn't the "Young Master Qi." How would she resolve that when the time came?
As she thought about it, Li Yuyan realized she needed to give Guan Sheng an identity that could protect him. She knew clearly that once the legendary Young Master Qi returned and found out she had married Guan Sheng, he would never let him off easily.
After washing up, she looked downstairs. Seeing her, Guan Sheng waved. "Come over and eat."
Li Yuyan said, "I have something to tell you."
Hearing this, Li Feng also walked over and said, "As it happens, I have something to say too."
"Huh?" Li Yuyan paused.
Li Feng stated directly, "To keep your marriage a secret, I’ve decided to arrange a job and an identity for our son-in-law. Yuyan, you must agree to this; there is no room for negotiation." He then turned to Guan Sheng with a smile. "Son-in-law, what do you think?"
Guan Sheng nodded slightly. "That would be excellent."
Li Yuyan felt a vague sense of unease.
"Son-in-law, since you have no objections, I’ll have Yuyan arrange a position for you as the Head of the Security Department in the group. How does that sound?"
"Fine." Guan Sheng had no objections. This way, he could keep Li Yuyan by his side. It would be easier for him to observe her and find out what was so special about this woman that his master favored her so much, even claiming she could change him.
Hearing this, Li Yuyan’s anxiety grew. Making Guan Sheng the Head of Security—she had just seen his blade qi with her own eyes. What if he got annoyed with someone and cut them down?
Guan Sheng finished his last sip of porridge and stood up. "I'm full. Wife, let's go to work!"
...
Half an hour later, Li Yuyan brought Guan Sheng to the group. Once inside, she led him to the security department, briefly introduced his position, and then left for her own office to handle her affairs. Of course, she did not reveal the news of their marriage.
On the floor of the security department, the young men in uniforms stared at Guan Sheng with wide eyes. Seeing a guy about their own age suddenly become their direct superior, they immediately felt a sense of resentment and looked quite unconvinced.
Guan Sheng scanned them all, a look of disdain crossing his face. These people were called security?
"Even the guard dogs at the gates of Assassin City are better than you."
