Chapter 29: The Bearing of a God of Slaughter
Veins bulged on his forehead, and his eyes were bloodshot as if he had not slept for several nights. For a moment, he had an overwhelming urge to draw the pistol from his holster and put a few rounds into Guan Sheng’s forehead. Yet, having witnessed Guan Sheng’s prowess, he understood that such an act would be utterly meaningless.
"Hmph!" he sneered. "Your tongue is sharp enough, but I’d like to see what you have to say when you're dying. Don't come begging for mercy then."
Guan Sheng remained composed. He tapped his fingers a few times and said, "The time is almost up. I should be leaving now."
Wang Sihu replied with disdain, "Leaving? You think far too highly of yourself. I’m still alive, aren't I?"
Guan Sheng shrugged. "You are alive, but in a moment, you will likely be stifled to death by your own frustration. Because when the people I am waiting for arrive, you will be the one kneeling and begging me to walk out of here."
"What?" Hearing this, Wang Sihu looked at Guan Sheng as if he were an idiot. He cracked his whip against the prison cell bars. "Guan, did your head get slammed in a door, or are you just insane? Do you even know who it is you killed? That was the young master of the Xu family, Xu Tao—the only son of Mr. Xu, the man in Jiangnan Province who holds the power to command ten thousand Qilin soldiers."
"Oh, and?" Guan Sheng remained indifferent. In his eyes, there were only those who deserved to die and those who did not. Any background, status, or power was, to him, worth less than a pile of dung. Had Wang Sihu known of Guan Sheng’s past, he likely would not have uttered such foolish words.
After all, since Guan Sheng first entered the world of assassins and earned the title "God of Killing," countless terrifying figures had knelt before him, begging for their lives. The Northern Frontier Demon King, known for surviving cannon fire with his bare flesh; the Dark Night Dragon King, leader of the world’s most sinister underground intelligence organization; the premier warlord of the war-torn El-Hai region, who commanded three million ruthless mercenaries—and many others.
They were all figures with status ten thousand times more terrifying than the Xu family. Yet, what was their ultimate fate? They all became stepping stones for Guan Sheng’s ascent to the throne of the God of Killing. Their heads still hung upon the walls of Assassin City, a warning to the entire world.
Recalling those days spent dancing on the edge of a blade, Guan Sheng felt a tinge of nostalgia. The Dragon Kingdom was far too comfortable. Even these villains lacked true depravity; they were entirely devoid of any real threat.
Observing Guan Sheng’s aloof demeanor, Wang Sihu gritted his teeth, his heart burning with rage. He was on the verge of a breakdown; where on earth did this man get his confidence?
Just then, a phone rang. Wang Sihu answered it immediately, a look of arrogant triumph spreading across his face. "Good, I understand. I’m coming over now." He hung up and glared at Guan Sheng. "Guan, you are finished!"
With that, he strode toward the entrance. At the gate of the Detention Bureau, a hundred fully armed soldiers were escorting a middle-aged man in a black suit. The man exuded a natural, imposing authority; his face was etched with murderous intent, and every gesture betrayed the air of a high-ranking official. It was none other than the most terrifying backing of the Xu family—Xu Hai, the second-in-command of the Jiangnan Province’s largest state-owned military industrial group.
"Mr. Xu, Mr. Xu! How... how did you get here so quickly? Why didn't you have someone notify me? I would have been at the gate to welcome you!" Wang Sihu immediately began fawning over him, showing just how significant Xu Hai’s status truly was. The second state-owned military industrial group controlled numerous national secrets and was a crucial pillar of the Dragon Kingdom’s military logistics. In wartime, such an entity acted as a strategic "weapon of terror," a fundamental guarantee of the nation's security. As the second-in-command, Xu Hai’s influence in Jiang City was feared by all the elites in high society. Not to mention, the ten thousand Qilin soldiers he could mobilize were a force many dared not provoke.
Xu Hai glanced coldly at Wang Sihu and roared, "My son has been beheaded, and you think I have the mood to notify you? What kind of thing do you think you are, Wang Sihu?"
Wang Sihu, realizing his mistake, immediately bowed low in a display of pathetic subservience. "Pah, pah, pah! Look at my mouth. Mr. Xu, please don't be angry; I spoke without thinking."
Hands clasped behind his back, Xu Hai asked sternly, "Where is the murderer who killed my son?"
Wang Sihu quickly replied, "He is already locked in a cell. His name is Guan Sheng."
"Lead the way!" Xu Hai commanded with a chilling growl.
Wang Sihu hesitated for a moment. "Mr. Xu, there is something I must tell you."
"Speak!"
Wang Sihu paused before saying, "To be honest, I have a personal grudge with this Guan Sheng as well; he disfigured my daughter. I used all my connections to investigate his background, and in the end, my old commanding officer told me that this man... is someone I cannot afford to provoke. His background is not simple. If you kill him just like that, I fear it may be difficult to handle."
Hearing this, Xu Hai let out a scoff of disdain. "Is there anyone in this world I dare not kill? I don't care who he is. He killed my son, and he will pay with his life. Even if my son had killed his mother, raped his wife and daughter, or wiped out his entire family—even if he had done something far more outrageous—he still wouldn't be someone this animal could lay a finger on."
"I will make him realize that killing the son of Xu Hai will make him regret ever being born a human."
With that, Xu Hai shoved Wang Sihu aside and marched with his men toward the cell block. Seeing this, Wang Sihu offered a sinister smile. "Yes, that is exactly the attitude needed." He hurried to follow.
Soon, the cell block was surrounded by the rhythmic, solemn sound of marching boots. As the soldiers charged into the corridor, filling every space with their presence, the inmates were struck by an overwhelming sense of oppression. It was a pressure that weighed upon them like the presence of a natural predator.
"Everyone, hands on heads and crouch down! Do not move!"
At the shout, the inmates in the cells quickly crouched, not daring to look up. Guan Sheng, however, looked toward the door. The twelve inmates inside his cell stood perfectly straight behind him, displaying absolute loyalty.
Then, Xu Hai and Wang Sihu appeared before his cell.
"The guard dog has returned?" Guan Sheng teased coldly. As for the soldiers, Guan Sheng didn't even bother to hold them in his gaze; such a meager display wasn't even enough to whet his appetite. When he took the head of that premier warlord, he had been hunted by over a million mercenaries.
Xu Hai’s gaze was frigid as he locked eyes with Guan Sheng. "Are you Guan Sheng?"
Guan Sheng looked at him. "Is Xu Tao your son?"
Xu Hai snorted. "Since you know who I am, there is no need for further talk." He waved his hand, and two soldiers raised their rifles, aiming directly at Guan Sheng’s head.
Guan Sheng narrowed his eyes and said coldly, "Are you sure you want to do this?"
Xu Hai clenched his fists, his expression twisted. "To avenge my son, why wouldn't I do this?"
Guan Sheng rose slowly and stretched his limbs. "I wasn't questioning you. I was merely confirming whether you are truly seeking your own death."
"Answer me!"
"Are you really going to point a gun at my head?"
"You know, people die when they do that."
