Qin Feng froze for a moment, then slowly walked over. “Sis, what are you doing here?”
His speech was slurred, his tongue practically tied in knots.
The woman watched his unsteady steps and caught the strong smell of alcohol on him. Frowning, she asked, “Have you been drinking?”
“At Township Chief Li’s place…” Qin Feng nodded. His head was spinning, and he quickly steadied himself against a lamppost.
Seeing this, the woman hurried over and supported him.
“How much did you drink? Li Dejun is a drunkard. Why did you drink so much with him? Couldn’t you have stopped sooner?” she scolded.
Qin Feng smiled faintly. “I ran into some… troubles… I wanted a drink… and ended up having a little too much.”
“Does drinking solve anything? When you drink too much, you’re the one who suffers. Do you think anyone else will care? Come upstairs first.” She helped him toward the building.
“I… I’m fine… You don’t have to worry about me… I can get up there myself…”
“You can barely speak, and you still say you’re fine? Upstairs!” The woman shot him an exasperated look.
When they reached Qin Feng’s dormitory, the woman frowned again at its shabby state. It was even worse than the prefabricated rooms where construction workers lived.
“I’ll get you a towel and wipe your face.” She helped Qin Feng lie down on the bed.
“No… I’m fine… You don’t have to bother with me… I’m not drunk… I’ll be all right after I sleep.” Qin Feng lay on the bed, mumbling incoherently.
The woman ignored him. She took his towel, wet it, and returned to wipe his face.
“I… I can do it myself…” Qin Feng still had a sliver of consciousness left and felt embarrassed to let her tend to him.
“Sit still. Don’t move!” the woman ordered.
She took the damp towel and gently wiped his face.
“Hold out your hands!”
Qin Feng obediently extended both hands for her to wipe.
Though his mind had already grown hazy, something deep and tender within him was touched at that moment.
“Sis… thank you. No one… no one has ever cared about me like this…” Qin Feng suddenly seized her hand and murmured.

“How can you say no one has ever cared about you? Didn’t your mother care about you?” The woman pulled her hand free and crouched down to remove his shoes, speaking casually.
“My mother… died in childbirth… when she gave birth to me…”
The woman was taking off his shoes. At his words, she looked up at him in surprise.
“But you still had your father!”
“My father… died in a car accident… when I was fourteen…”
The woman’s hands stopped again. She stared blankly at Qin Feng for a long while without saying a word.
“You said you still had a girlfriend,” she said, trying to find something comforting to say.
“She… Heh… She slept with someone else behind my back… in the apartment I rented for her… in the bed I bought for her…” Qin Feng let out a bitter laugh. But as he laughed, tears suddenly began to flow down his face.
The woman could no longer remain composed. Seeing Qin Feng’s tear-streaked face, she felt a surge of overwhelming tenderness.
She slowly sat down at the head of the bed, lifted Qin Feng’s head onto her lap, and gently brushed the tears from his face.
“It’s all right. It’s all in the past now.”
“Sis… I’m leaving.” Resting his head on her lap, Qin Feng reached out and took her hand again.
The woman gently stroked his face. “Where are you planning to go?”
“I don’t know where to go… I don’t even know… where I can go…”
“If you don’t know where to go, then don’t go anywhere. Stay here.”
“Stay here? How am I supposed to stay?” Qin Feng shook his head.
“She told me to leave as soon as possible… She said she could crush me… as easily as crushing an ant… Ha-ha… I’m just a little ant…”
“Who is she?” the woman asked.
“A stranger… A disgusting stranger… I don’t understand… Why is Heaven treating me like this? I’ve been so tired all my life… So tired…”
“I understand the grievances in your heart, and I understand the pain you’re feeling right now. But this matter has not yet been conclusively decided. Why are you in such a hurry to condemn yourself to death?” the woman said.

“Sis… There’s no saving me… You’re not in this line of work. You wouldn’t understand… They hold the knife and I’m the meat… Right now, I’m just a piece of meat on the chopping block…” Qin Feng gave a bitter laugh, his mind growing increasingly muddled.
“This matter has not gone through an investigation or the collection of evidence by the organization, nor has there been any disciplinary interview. That is completely contrary to organizational procedure, so it does not count. It can be overturned at any time.” The woman spoke slowly.
“What happened in Bishan cannot be decided however Xu Guoli and Wang Yunfei please. Don’t worry. I will definitely give you an explanation.” She spoke to Qin Feng with grave sincerity.
“Ah… Sis… How do you… how do you know… What do you mean…” Qin Feng’s mind had grown heavier and heavier. He could barely understand her words, much less grasp their meaning.
“You don’t need to know what I mean, and you don’t need to do anything. Just sleep well. When you wake up, all of this will be over… Go to sleep.”
The woman sat beside the bed and spoke softly to him.
Qin Feng really was drunk. He could no longer hold on and soon fell into a deep sleep.
The woman gazed at the young man before her, several years younger than herself, her heart filled with conflicting emotions.
She admitted that she felt something special for him. There was a unique charm about him that had always drawn her in.
Especially after hearing what Qin Feng had endured, the maternal instinct deep within her surged forth. She wanted to protect this young man and take care of him.
The woman remained by Qin Feng’s side, his head resting on her thighs as he slept heavily.
She waited until he was completely asleep before quietly lifting his head from her lap. Then she stood, preparing to leave.
The moment she rose, Qin Feng suddenly reached out from the bed and wrapped his arms around her waist.
“Don’t go… Don’t go… Sis… Please don’t leave… Don’t leave me alone…”
“All right, all right, I won’t go… I won’t go…” the woman said helplessly, sitting down beside the bed once more.
But Qin Feng, already completely unconscious, refused to let go. He pulled her into his arms, turned over, and pressed her onto the bed, kissing her lips wildly and clumsily.
The woman resisted for a moment, but as a woman, she was no match for Qin Feng in his drunken frenzy.
When Qin Feng’s tongue forced its way into her mouth, she admitted that she too had been stirred.
The two embraced and rolled across the bed, kissing passionately. Their bodies grew hotter and hotter, until the room was filled with the scent of desire.
Qin Feng’s hands slipped beneath the woman’s clothes, peeling them away piece by piece.
