Qin Feng had been walking for over an hour before finally reaching the Bìshān Township Government. Gazing at the dilapidated courtyard, he could only smile bitterly to himself.

Since he was here, he might as well settle in. Qin Feng found the director of the Civil Affairs Office, Xiao Bo, and reported his arrival.

Xiao Bo’s reaction was neither cold nor warm, more like perfunctory. After a few encouraging words, he assigned Qin Feng to handle the paperwork and told him to start working in the office.

As Qin Feng entered the Civil Affairs Office, he found three or four people lounging about.

Some were chatting, others knitting sweaters, and a few were playing chess—no one was actually working.

Had he not known this was a government office, Qin Feng might have thought he had wandered into a community activity center.

“Hello, everyone!” Qin Feng greeted cheerfully as he stepped inside.

As the newcomer, he wanted to be polite and respectful.

“Who are you?” a scruffy middle-aged man lifted his eyes to ask.

Qin Feng approached with a smile and offered the man a cigarette. “My name’s Qin Feng. I was just assigned here from the county.”

The man’s face instantly darkened. He forcefully snatched the cigarette from Qin Feng’s hand and crushed it on the floor.

“Who let you in here?” the man growled fiercely.

Qin Feng was taken aback, thinking the man hadn’t heard him clearly, so he explained again, “I was just assigned by the county to work here in Bìshān Township’s Civil Affairs Office...”

“I don’t care who sent you or where you came from. Go back where you came from. We don’t want you here. Understand?” the man cut him off sharply.

“Is there some kind of misunderstanding?” Qin Feng was confused.

“What misunderstanding? I told you, we don’t want you here. Don’t you dare step foot in this office again. Get out!” The man jabbed his finger right at Qin Feng’s nose.

Qin Feng hated being fingered like that more than anything.

“Why should I leave? Who do you think you are?” Qin Feng put his bag on the table and met the man’s gaze.

“I’m Yang Delin, deputy director of the Civil Affairs Office. I’m in charge here. I don’t care who assigned you, you can go anywhere you like, just not to the Civil Affairs Office.” Yang was arrogant.

Qin Feng frowned. “Then I’m going to stay. The county assigned me here. What right do you have to stop me?”

“I’ll say it again—get out!”

“I’m coming in today. Let’s see what you’re going to do about it!” Qin Feng’s temper flared instantly; he had always had a fiery disposition.

“If you don’t leave, I swear I’ll kill you today!” Yang snarled.

“Come on! If you don’t kill me today, you’re my grandson!” Qin Feng was fully provoked.

“Damn it! How dare you talk back! If I don’t kill you today, I’m not Yang!” Yang cursed loudly.

“Xiao Bo assigned you to handle the documents, right? Fine, then you’ll do the paperwork.” Yang pointed at someone. “Xiao Zhou, bring all those poverty household information forms over here for him to work on.”

“Huh?I'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
