Wang Yunfei narrowed his somewhat cold, shrewd eyes and looked at Yang Delin. “Are you sure Xu Guoli arranged this personally?”

“Who else could it be? He’s not giving you even an ounce of face.” Yang Delin was deliberately sowing discord between Wang Yunfei and Xu Guoli.

Wang Yunfei’s fingers tapped rhythmically on the table.

“I assigned that brat to guard the reservoir, and he immediately sent someone back to the Civil Affairs Office for me, even promoted him to deputy director. Heh... Xu Guoli is deliberately provoking me, retaliating because I meddled in personnel matters.” Wang Yunfei let out a cold laugh, his expression darkening.

“Village chief, we absolutely can’t let this go. We finally managed to send that kid to Bishan Reservoir. I believe it won’t be more than three days before he resigns on his own.”

In truth, it was Wang Yunfei, not Yang Delin, who was pushing Qin Feng out. Yang Delin was merely acting on Wang Yunfei’s behalf.

“So what do you suggest we do instead of just letting it go?”

“Xu Guoli’s transfer this time had no formal procedures, no paperwork—it's a violation and completely invalid.”

“Should I have gone through the procedures when I transferred that kid to the reservoir? Xu Guoli did this on purpose.”

Management in the township was rather chaotic, especially in remote places like Bishan Township. Sometimes a leader’s word carried more weight than regulations.

“So what now? Let that kid just swagger back here and sit on equal footing with me?” Yang Delin couldn’t accept it. How could he face anyone?

“What’s the rush? As long as that kid’s still at the Civil Affairs Office, whether he’s a big shot or a nobody isn’t for you to decide. His deputy director role is worthless—how can he compare to you? Just wait for another chance to take him down. I’m not going to confront Xu Guoli head-on over this.” Wang Yunfei’s gaze was dark and menacing.

“Village chief, what’s this kid’s background? Why are both Hu Jiayun and Xu Guoli opposing you over him?” Yang Delin was puzzled but still kept stirring the pot.

“No matter what background he has, he must be taken down.”

“Village chief, why are you so determined to take this kid down?” Yang Delin asked, voicing his genuine curiosity.

“Is that something you should be asking? Yang Delin, if you take this kid down, next time the deputy director position under Director Xiao Bo will be yours.” Wang Yunfei promised Yang Delin.

Hearing this, Yang Delin’s eyes lit up, and he strode out of Wang Yunfei’s office once again full of ambition.

...

After sitting in the Civil Affairs Office all day, Qin Feng understood one thing: although he had inexplicably become the deputy director of the Civil Affairs Office, the position was essentially useless. His salary hadn’t increased one bit, and no one actually listened to him.

Qin Feng still had to do paperwork and be ordered around like before. But there was a silver lining—at least Yang Delin no longer shouted at him.

After work, everyone else left, but Qin Feng stayed late in the office to finish the paperwork.

When he finally stepped out of the Civil Affairs Office, he headed toward the middle school.

Just as Qin Feng emerged, Hu Jiayun was coming down the stairs and spotted him from a distance.

Hu Jiayun immediately recognized the “disgusting” man who had been staring at her during her morning run.

Even more surprising to her was that this “disgusting” man had just come out of the Civil Affairs Office.

“That’s Qin Feng?” Hu Jiayun muttered to herself, then watched his figure walk out of the courtyard thoughtfully.

Qin Feng remained completely unaware of all this.

The next morning, Qin Feng was once again punctual for his morning run.

When he arrived at the sports field, he saw a woman running far ahead.

From yesterday’s experience, Qin Feng was wiser this time; he didn’t dare get close but deliberately kept his distance, running separately.

He was somewhat afraid of this cold, aloof woman and even more afraid he might sneak another glance and be deemed “disgusting.”

Qin Feng kept his distance, but the woman deliberately slowed her pace, as if waiting for him.

Because she slowed down, Qin Feng inevitably caught up. Out of fear, he sped up when approaching her, trying to put some space between them.

“Why are you running so fast? Afraid of me?” the woman suddenly said as he passed her.

“Are you talking to me?” Qin Feng was momentarily stunned.

“Is there anyone else here besides you and me?” she retorted.

“Uh… no, I’m just running at a normal pace,” Qin Feng explained.

“You were staring at me yesterday; why not today?” the woman asked while running.

“I really wasn’t staring, I was just running normally...” Qin Feng explained again, his cheeks slightly flushed.

“Normal running involves staring at women?” she asked with a smile.

“I... I...” Qin Feng was embarrassed and speechless.

“In the future, if you look at women, do it openly. Openly looking is appreciation; sneaking looks is voyeurism.”

Qin Feng wished he could find a hole to crawl into.

“I really wasn’t staring at you... I just...” Qin Feng wanted to explain but didn’t know how.

“Why do you live here?” The woman took off her sports earphones, panting heavily, sweat glistening on her face, making her even more alluring.

“Work assigned me here.”

“Work assigned you? That’s an abandoned student dormitory, empty for years. Tell me who assigned you.” Her tone turned cold as she abruptly stopped.

“Doesn’t matter. I think it’s fine—at least I have a place to stay. I’m a grown man; I don’t fuss over these things.”

“I’m surprised you think that way. Well, young people need to learn to endure some hardship,” she said, picking up her pace again.

Qin Feng followed her running.

“Did you often sneak looks at women like this before?”

“I... I really wasn’t staring...” Qin Feng didn’t expect her to bring the topic back up.

Seeing Qin Feng’s adorably flushed face, the woman couldn’t help but laugh. She had forgotten how long it had been since she last smiled so freely.

“I heard there was a car accident on the road ahead a few days ago. Have you heard about it?” she asked casually.
