Chapter 7: Pei Yunian, Are You Trying to Overturn the Heavens?
Pei Yunian stood motionless, turning a deaf ear to Qin Wanyi’s words. His gaze dropped, finally settling on her ankle. The lighting in the private room was poor, making it impossible to see the true state of her injured foot.
He crouched down halfway, his large hand gently cupping her injured ankle as he lifted it. His fingertips brushed over the wounded area, whether intentionally or not.
"My Lady, your foot injury has yet to heal; it is not suitable for you to drink."
The look he gave her as he raised his head was laced with tenderness. Shen Lin, watching from the side, looked as if she had just witnessed something thrilling.
Qin Wanyi impatiently lifted her toe and tapped his face. "A dog, and you want to discipline your master? Get lost, now!"
"Oh, come on, he means well. Why don't you just..." Shen Lin patted Qin Wanyi on the shoulder, but before she could finish, a warning glare from Qin Wanyi forced her to shut her mouth.
The kick just now hadn't hurt Pei Yunian’s face at all; in fact, his heart had skipped a beat in that very instant.
"Did you not hear me? Get lost!" Seeing him remain unmoved, Qin Wanyi grabbed a wine glass and threw it. It grazed his cheek and shattered against the floor with a sharp crash.
Shen Lin had never seen Qin Wanyi this angry, and a chill ran down her back. However, she was even more curious about how Pei Yunian would respond.
Pei Yunian stood up in silence. Without giving Qin Wanyi a chance to react, he reached out with long arms, scooped her up, and slung her over his shoulder.
"What are you doing!" Qin Wanyi turned pale with shock, unable to believe that Pei Yunian would be so bold as to carry her over his shoulder in front of everyone. She could even clearly feel the warmth against her backside.
Pei Yunian walked out of the room without looking back. Shen Lin, also stunned by the act, regained her senses just before they disappeared and excitedly pulled out her phone to snap a few pictures.
"Wow! This guy is really something!" She looked at the photos on her screen, satisfied, and smiled.
Qin Wanyi felt utterly humiliated. Once outside the room, she wanted to cover her face, yet she was so angry she wanted to pummel someone.
Once they were out of the club, Pei Yunian finally set her down. Qin Wanyi took a breath and immediately slapped him.
The man’s head jerked to the side; a red mark appeared on his face, which had yet to fully recover from previous bruises.
"You bastard, who told you to touch me?"
Pei Yunian tilted his head slightly, chuckling as he pressed his tongue against his cheek. The look in his cold eyes as they rested on Qin Wanyi held a hint of possessiveness.
He was actually laughing!
Qin Wanyi was so furious she abandoned all decorum, slapping his handsome face again and delivering a kick for good measure before she felt any relief.
The man remained composed, allowing her to vent her frustration.
As their eyes locked, Pei Yunian’s tall frame loomed over her. Qin Wanyi frowned and instinctively stepped back until her back pressed against the cold car body.
Pei Yunian continued to draw closer. From a short distance away, the heat radiating from his body washed over her, leaving her feeling agitated.
"Pei Yunian!" Qin Wanyi placed a hand against his chest to stop him from moving any further.
"My Lady, what is it?" Pei Yunian’s voice was gentle, devoid of any complaint despite her recent actions.
"You had better remember your place. If you ever overstep your boundaries like this again, you can get out," Qin Wanyi snapped.
A light breeze caught her curly hair, lifting it gently, while her crimson lips parted in a way that looked incredibly alluring.
He gently took hold of her hand and bowed, planting a kiss on the back of her fair skin.
Before she could scold him again, he reached around her waist with one arm and opened the car door. "My Lady, please, get in."
Qin Wanyi glared at him with resentment before turning to climb into the car.
The drive was exceptionally quiet; neither of them spoke a word. Pei Yunian watched through the rearview mirror as the person in the backseat stared at the scenery outside.
The soft breeze blowing through the window stirred her long, curly hair. The golden sunlight washed over her, making her skin look luminous, as if she were lit by a spotlight.
"My Lady, it is my duty to protect you. If the Head of the Qin family knew your ankle was severely injured, I would be blamed for failing to take good care of you."
Pei Yunian explained calmly. Qin Wanyi slowly turned to look at the back of his head, feeling half-skeptical of his words.
"Is that so? But I don't want to see such reckless behavior again," she warned coldly.
Pei Yunian agreed softly, stealing glances at her through the mirror from time to time.
The intensity of his gaze made her skin crawl. Qin Wanyi brushed her hair behind her ear. "Keep looking, and I’ll gouge your eyes out."
Pei Yunian freed one hand to retrieve a document envelope from the passenger seat, handing it to Qin Wanyi during a pause at a traffic light.
"My Lady, this just arrived."
Qin Wanyi gave a cold grunt of acknowledgment. She took it with one hand and opened the envelope.
Inside lay a red booklet. The words "Divorce Certificate" were strikingly prominent.
As her fingertips traced the gold-embossed characters, Qin Wanyi felt a sense of relief wash over her.
Finally, she was free!
She had waited a long time for this day.
At the hospital, Jiang Yi also received the divorce certificate mailed by the Civil Affairs Bureau. His expression was complex.
His fingertips turned white as he gripped the document; he felt as though something were lodged in his chest, making it impossible to breathe.
When Lin Xiaoxiao saw the bright red booklet, her eyes lit up with immense excitement.
It was their divorce certificate!
"Qin Wanyi, you’re finally being sensible," she thought. Now that they were divorced, didn't she have a chance?
"Brother Yi, I never expected Qin Wanyi to be so heartless—to divorce you just like that." Lin Xiaoxiao kept a close watch on the man's face. Seeing his dark expression, she quickly sat by the bed, took his arm, and whispered words of comfort.
"A woman like that isn't worth keeping, Brother Yi. It’s okay. Even without that annoying woman, you still have me."
At this, Lin Xiaoxiao lowered her head, feigning shyness. "No matter what happens, I will never leave Brother Yi."
Jiang Yi was feeling miserable, but Lin Xiaoxiao’s words touched a nerve. He patted the back of her hand expressionlessly as a sign of acknowledgment.
Yet, thinking that Qin Wanyi had divorced him because of a "dog" made him feel incredibly humiliated.
The image of the way Qin Wanyi had looked at that dog flashed through his mind, making him feel as though he were the ridiculous clown in this scenario.
Enraged, he slammed his fist into the bedside table. The metal furniture emitted a loud clang, startling Lin Xiaoxiao, who stood up in confusion and watched him helplessly.
"Brother Yi, what's wrong? Please, don't be like this; you're scaring me."
The man was in the heat of his anger and ignored her completely. "Damn it!"
In a fit of rage, Jiang Yi swept his arm across the table, knocking everything onto the floor in a cathartic release of anger.
Unwilling to let it go, he called his bodyguard and ordered him to investigate the exact relationship between Qin Wanyi and that dog.
He did not believe that in such a short time, Qin Wanyi would divorce him just for a dog. There had to be something more to it.
